December 2007 Edition

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm on December 3 at the Rookery. 15 members were present. Cold & snowy weather.

Officer Reports

Secretary:

Minutes from the November meeting are on the CVAS website. No additions or corrections were noted by the members present .

Treasurer:

Steve provided the following financial data:

Cash in Bank - $1,631.67, Petty Cash - $53.00, Total Cash - $1,684.67

For the month, we paid, telephone in the amount of $51.00, electricity $5.99, the $30 semiannual website host fee and the annual $8.95 domain registration fee..


Vice President:

Dan R described his participation in the recent Observatory Park Technical Committee meeting at the Lake Erie Science Center. Site plans include: A large planetary system model, sundial, and an outdoor model of moon phases. Dan suggested a “sun dagger” to mark noon, similar to one at Chaco Canyon.

Observatory Director:

Marty was not present, but provided the following written report: Nothing much to report about the Hill. All quiet on the Eastern front. I believe that Russ filled one or more of the 5 gallon kerosene containers that live in the shed. Both heaters are working, but the smaller one is a bit slow to light .

Editor:

Tom distributed the Nov/Dec 2007 edition of “The Valley Skywatcher”, and indicated he will publish it quarterly in 2008 beginning in March ..

Visitors

Brian Gingrich from Shaker Heights attended tonights meeting. He expressed an interest in joining.

Old Business:

  1. Russ tested the alt-az operation of the 10” f/6.3 LX200 SC telescope donated to CVAS by Earl Green, and found it to work very well. The telescope is complete with an equatorial wedge, field tripod, and miscellaneous accessories including various eyepieces, filters, case, etc. The tripod is the lighter version supplied by Meade. There is a problem with the display on the hand controller, but the scope slews properly . .

New Business:

  1. During the past month, Tom prepared and submitted an application for a grant to the Chagrin Falls Chamber of Commerce .
