December 2010 Edition

The meeting was called to order by President Ian Cooper at 7:50 pm on December 4, 2010 at Joe Petrick's home before our annual Christmas party. 16 members were present.

Officer Reports

President:

No report.

Vice-President:

Russ talked about the inability to get a baseball cap patch using the logo with the Sombrero galaxy. We should come up with ideas for a logo that would be more identifiable at the January meeting. Russ has been working with Steve on updating the website. The updated website is installed on a laptop on the desert table for members to look at.

Secretary:

Ian requested a change in the November minutes that stated that donations made by an attorney Gerald Hess to CWRU of an assortment of various astronomical mirrors and lenses and mounts and telescopes were made directly to CVAS. The November minutes with this change were approved.

Treasurer:

Steve read off the dues update by member.

Cash in Bank - $2,124.03. Petty Cash - $116.00, Total Cash - $2,240.03.
For the month we paid:

- telephone in the amount of $51.86
- electricity $28.49.

Observatory Director:

Ken was not present but Marty reported that he replaced a ribbon cable that had one of the connectors burned off on the PC that controls the 16 inch. This should greatly improve the dependability of start up on the 16 inch control system. This is about a twenty year old PC that cannot be made air tight to prevent internal condensation.

Editor:

Ron is working on assembling the winter issue of the Valley Skywatcher. Ron asked for articles to publish.

Director of Observations:

Bob handed out the monthly sky calendar and discussed the events this month.

Old Business:

  1. Steve Fishman reported that the Western Reserve Junior Service League is putting on a candle light ball. CVAS is donating a private star party to them at Frohring or the Rookery for up to 20 people sometime in April or May. Steve declared the value of the Star Party at $250.00.
  2. Ian brought in some of the donated optics from Daryl Hess.

New Business:

  1. Ian escorted Sandy Oberle to Observatory Park to see her husband’s telescope. She was very happy to see all of the facilities being built around her husband’s telescope.

  2. Our next meeting will be at Sunny Brook Preserve on Saturday January 8.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM. No observing due to cloudy skies. We continued with the Christmas Party at Joe's house.

Our next meeting at Sunnybrook will be January 8, 2011 at 7:30 PM.
