The meeting was called to order by President Ian Cooper at 7:30 pm on February 6, 2010 at Sunnybrook Preserve with 12 members.

Officer Reports


The minutes from the January meeting are posted on the website. One correction was requested by John Gorka. John wrote an article to the Chagrin Valley Times, which appeared in the January 15 issue. The article focused on the light pollution efforts by the Northeast Ohio section of the International Dark-Sky Association and the Geauga Park District.


Steve read off the dues update by member.

Cash in Bank - $1,621.19, Petty Cash - $62.00, Total Cash - $1,683.19.
For the month we paid:

- telephone in the amount of $52.05
- electricity $26.03

Observatory Director:

Ken was not at the meeting, but noted via email that we need $100 to get a new battery for the tractor. Dan made a motion to approve the $100 and the motion was passed. Russ mentioned everything is fine and dry at the hill.  There was a discussion about putting a phone in the North Observatory. That will be completed in the spring when the ground thaws.


2 Visitors were at this meeting. Patty Cook is a volunteer with the Geauga Parks looking for assistance on binocular observing. She brought one of her neighbors.

Old Business:

  1. Website being worked on. Steve will start in February.
  2. Member’s data form from Larry. Larry emailed Steve a sample form. Will be reviewed during them month as Larry was not at the meeting to discuss details.
  3. Discussion on changes to constitution. Ian handed out an update, prepared by Larry, with a request that members review and return comments at the next meeting.
  4. Aaron handed out an updated version of the club brochure. Nice layout and Aaron will print a hundred or so copies for handouts. We discussed making lower cost black and white copies to hand out at star parties, saving the more expensive color versions for selected occassions.

New Business:

  1. At prior meetings, we discussed changing the Librarian function to Historian (held by Tom Q) and to add an Assistant Treasurers' position (Ken F) . We were planning to vote at this meeting, but neither member was present . Will be deferred to next meeting.
  2. Reviewed Calendar Dates : Girdled Road date on Saturday night. There is a Girdled Road star party each month during the winter. We should have some Geauga Park District dates at the next meeting.
  3. Steve Fishman is helping 4 Mayfield High students with their Astronomy Science Olympiad.this year. At the Solon invitational event on February 7, one group camed in2nd place, while the other team came in 10th.
  4. John Gorka prepared 2009 IDA Northeast Ohio Section report .  He passed it out for review and will submit it to the national IDA in Tucson
  5. Ian mentioned that he talked with Mario Toniklii, formerly of the Geneva Ohio astronomy society. Mario can do some art work for us for CVAS baseball caps.
  6. Ian will attend the Jaycees dinner at the Raintree restaurant in Chagrin Falls on Monday evening, Feb 8th to pick up any award money.
  7. Reviewed Calendar Dates : Girdled Road date on Friday, the 12th.  The Rookery on Feb. 13th

Director of Observations:
