January 2009 Edition

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm on January 5 at The Rookery. 15 members and 5 visitors were present. .

Officer Reports


The minutes from the December meeting are posted on the website. No additions or corrections were noted by the members present.


Steve provided the following financial data:

Cash in Bank - $2,663.47, Petty Cash - $89.00, Total Cash - $2,752.47 .

For the month, we paid, telephone in the amount of $51.67, electricity $3.69. Payment in the amount of $300 was made on the land contract. The remaining balance on the contract is $2,700.

A $500 donation was received from Joe Petrick with the stipulation that the money be used to pay down the balance owed on the land contract

Vice President:

Dan R showed the F5 5-inch refractor telescope he has been refurbishing .

Observatory Director:

Marty was absent, but reported via email that all is quiet at the Hill. He also noted that someone was at the Hill at least once every month during 2008.


No update at this time. .


The club welcomes the visitors and new members present at the meeting tonight: Dick Taylor, Becky Parkin, John Scalia, Terry Scalia, and Joan Francis.

Old Business:

  1. Ian reported that the organizational meeting of the new Geauga County IDA section is postponed until February 2009
  2. Bob reported that 2 star parties at Frohring Meadows are scheduled for this coming season. Please see the club’s calendar of events webpage for details.

New Business:

  1. Becky Parkin described the star party activities scheduled to occur on January 24 2009 at the Outdoor Skill Center. Please refer to the club’s calendar of events webpage for details .
  2. Our next meeting is 2/2/09 at the Rookery 7:30 pm .

Director of Observations:

Bob provided his monthly report for January and provided copies. For Bob’s complete observation report, please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website. Discussion occurred involving various topics including reasons for changing angle between Saturn’s ring plane and our line of sight.

Several members described observing sessions during the last month, but cloudy weather again severely limited these sessions. Russ & Ron were at the hill on 1/3/09 and obtained images of various deep sky objects and photometric data from the long-term eclipsing variable EE Cep.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM. A first quarter cloudy night prevented any viewing.
