Vice President:

No report given.

Observatory Director:

No report given.

Tom provided the July/August 2007 edition of the Valley Skywatcher.

Frank Del Greco was present at the meeting. After expressing his intention to join CVAS, he was welcomed as a new member.

Old Business:

  1. Dan is working on the 12.5” OTA to be mounted on the new outside pipe pier. We need to consider what part of the telescope needs to be stored inside when not in use. Alternatives include storing both the scope and the cradle inside the lower observatory, or storing just the scope inside and leaving the cradle outside with a cover. Tom offered to paint the OTA, we decided on white for the color. Russ plans to paint the inside pier for the LX200 this coming week. The new roof rails have been fabricated and painted. Additional posts are in the ground that will support the roof when rolled off. The LX200 might be operational on its new pier mid-July..
  2. Vickie provided an update on the status of our winter meeting location, and was given authorization to make a commitment to the Rookery at the Geauga Park District. There appeared to be a consensus that Monday evenings, Nov-April, would work for the majority of the members present. Vickie will follow up with the Rookery shortly.
  3. Ron reported that the new astronomy discussion group met for the first time last month at the end of the business meeting, the topic Variable Stars. Tonight’s discussion will be led by Steve K, and will feature Favorite Objects in Cygnus. Next month, Bob will lead the group with Strategies for Viewing Jupiter. September’s discussion will be an introduction to the many aspects of Astrophotography & Imaging. The topic for October will be Star Hopping Techniques. Tom pointed out that the discussion group might help with public outreach this coming winter at the Rookery
  4. The club calendar was reviewed. Plans for the upcoming star parties were discussed. Refer to the club’s website for details..

New Business:

  1. Tom suggested the idea of selling the 14” Dobsonian currently in storage in the lower observatory. Tom and Steve F will work out a suggested selling price. Several members have provided suggestions as to the amount, which seems to be in the $1500 to $2000 range. The club would also agree to sell the scope to any club member for $500 less than the suggested selling price. After discussion, Dan made a motion to sell the telescope with these terms, seconded by Larry. A quorum was present, and the motion passed.

Director of Observations:

Bob reviewed his monthly report for May. For his complete observation report, please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website.

The meeting adjourned at 9:15 PM. Steve Kainec led an after-meeting discussion about observing deep-sky objects in the constellation Cygnus.
