Officer Reports

No report.

Tom reported that the Chagrin Falls Library astronomical display is still on view. IDA wants to put a display in the Chagrin Library during July, August, and September. Tom e-mailed John Gorka about this.

Larry stated that the May minutes were posted on the CVAS website. The May minutes were approved with one change.

Steve read off the dues update by member.

Cash in Bank - $2,217.48. Petty Cash - $75.00, Total Cash - $2.292.48.
For the month we paid:

- telephone in the amount of $52.18
- electricity $26.48

We reimbursed Russ $20.00 for buying Roundup to kill poison ivy around where the pine trees were cut down. The membership approved the reimbursement to Russ.

Observatory Director:

Ken reported that Jack took care of the wasp problem in the observatory roof. A dead tree fell down about half way from the bottom of the Hill and the North Observatory. Look out for it if you are driving down the East lane as it extends about three of four feet into the path. Keith and Shirley along with their daughters gave permission before cutting the pine trees down.

No Update.

Director of Observations:

Bob handed out the monthly sky calendar for June 2010. For the complete report, please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website.

Light Pollution Report

No update this month

No visitors were at this meeting. .

Old Business:

  1. Discussion on next week’s OTAA convention. Convention starts at 6:00. Ian passed around a list of stuff to sign up to bring including food, towels, plates, utensils etc. Charcoal and grills are ok .
  2. Discussion on Metroparks Super Star Party. Received e-mail from Becky, of Lake Metroparks asking if we are planning on charging a $250 fee. They have been told that if Lake Metroparks charges a fee we charge a fee. They want about a 45 minute presentation on astronomy . The topic would be on light pollution. Perhaps we can have someone from IDA make this presentation.

The amphitheater area is being worked on and cannot be used this year. The telescopes would be set up near the pavilion to the West. The real problem would be with headlights from the parking lot and where we would be set up plus a long trek to haul scopes. There is electrical service from the pavilion and we would need some long extension cords. Someone needs to find out what they are doing with the amphitheater and what the time table for work on it is. Becky cannot attend Saturday summer meetings of CVAS so communications will not be optimum.

New Business:

  1. Larry Lovell passed away last Thursday at the age of 86. Larry was an inspiration to Ian, Quiz, Dan, and others during their youth. He will be greatly missed.
  2. Lake Metroparks has a new 16” meade telescope that Russ Swaney has been trying to make operational and connect to a planetarium package.
  3. We agreed to change the July meeting to July 10 instead of holding it on July 3
  4. Dan mentioned that there was a Zhumell 8” Dob for sale with accessories for $300.
  5. Upcoming star party at Girdled Road on June 11th between 9:30 and 11:00 PM. On June 18th, there is a star party at Munson Township Park starting at 9:00. On July 2 nd there is a star party at Mentor Headlands Park.

Our next meeting is July 10 at Indian Hill Observatory at 8:00 PM.

Meeting adjourned at 9:15 pm.
