Observatory Director:

Editor:

Tom distributed the March 2007 edition of the Valley Skywatcher to everyone present. The Skywatcher is also posted on our website. .

Director of Observations:

Bob read his report. For his complete observation report, please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website.

Not much observing was done by the members since our last meeting due to some pretty cloudy weather. Unfortunately, the lunar eclipse last Saturday was not observed by any of the members present. But we will have another opportunity to observe a similar event in August..

Rick Trembour reported seeing a bald eagle earlier in the day along the Chagrin River not far from North Chagrin Reservation. Other members mentioned seeing buzzards recently as well – a sure sign that spring is coming.

Old Business:

  1. Tom received an estimate for recoating the 12 ½ ” primary mirror. The cost of the recoating (including shipping) is approximately $240. The plan is to assemble the optical tube this spring when the coating is complete, and mount the scope on a pier to be constructed on the Hill’s lower level. The club owns the various parts of the scope, and the mirror coating is all that is needed to start the project. .

  2. Steve F. made a motion to authorize Tom to arrange for the mirror to be recoated in accordance with the quotation. Seconded by Rick Trembour, and passed by the members present.

New Business:

  1. Tom suggested we consider having a booth at the Geauga County Fair this year. We postponed further consideration until a future meeting.
  2. Steve K. pointed out that the March new moon is the time for Messier Marathons. Several members expressed an interest in conducting a marathon at the Hill this month. We set the date for Saturday March 17 for the event.
  3. We had a brief discussion regarding ways to respond to non-members when they ask for help with new telescopes. Bob suggested there might be time at a star party to answer questions and maybe engage in a demonstration. Steve K likes the idea of asking the individual to join us early at a regular meeting at the Hill.
  4. Steve F suggested we update the member skills list on the website. We agreed the best way to do this is for all members to review the current list on the website and send any updates to Steve F.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM
