March 2008 Edition

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm on March 3 at the Rookery. 14 members were present. .

Officer Reports

Secretary:

Minutes from the January meeting are on the CVAS website. Ron was absent from the February meeting, but Tom will provide notes from the February meeting for posting to the website .

Treasurer:

Steve provided the following financial data:

Cash in Bank - $2,248.52, Petty Cash - $20.00, Total Cash - $2,268.52

For the month, we paid, telephone in the amount of $51.55, electricity $2.84. T We would like to express appreciation to the Chagrin Falls Jaycees for their generous contribution in the amount of $250.00 to our club .

Vice President:

No report given. Dan is teaching Monday night this semester so he can not make the winter meetings. .

Tom provided copies of the March 2008 issue of The Valley Skywatcher to all in attendance. ..

Visitors

One visitor showed up at the end of the meeting. .

Old Business:

  1. Tom reported that we will have a table set up this coming Saturday 3/8/08 at the Chagrin Falls Library 50 th birthday event. The club intends to display items of astronomical interest in a display case at the library during the month of April. If anyone would like to provide items for display, please contact Tom. (March 10 followup - event was cancelled due to huge snowstorm that shut down the entire county libraray system and many other events).
  2. The CVAS calendar was reviewed and discussed.
  3. Science Olympiad – Steve F has been working again this year with the Mayfield High School students. Recently, the students took a 2 nd place out of 15 schools at the regional competition on Lorain . Next for the group – the state championship in Columbus . Congratulations, Steve and students! Vickie has also been working with the Mayfield Middle School students for the Science Olympiad program.
  4. Steve F and Ian proposed the idea of donating the 14” telescope to the Geauga Park District’s Observatory Park project .
  5. A meeting of the planning board for Geauga's Observatory Park project will take place on March 13. Tom plans to attend

New Business:

  1. CVAS member John Gorka plans to make a presentation about light pollution at the Munson Township Zoning Commission meeting scheduled to take place Monday 3/17/08 at 7:00 pm t.
  2. A suggestion was made to consider conducting star parties at various locations within the Ashtabula Park District this summer. A discussion about this topic took place, but no decisions were reached.

Director of Observations:

Bob provided his monthly report for March, and in his absence, Steve F reviewed the report for the members present. Please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website for the full report. Russ Swaney showed a picture he took of Comet Holmes next to the California nebula. Steve Fishman showed a few pictures of the February 20 total lunar eclipse (cold and clear for that event).
