May 2010 Edition

The meeting was called to order by President Ian Cooper at 8:00 pm on May 1, 2010 at Indian Hill Observatory. A quorum was p resent.

Officer Reports

President:

No report.

Vice-President:

Tom said the library project is complete.
Baseball hats will cost between 20 and 30 dollars.

Secretary:

Larry stated that the April minutes are posted on the CVAS website. The April minutes were approved.

Treasurer:

Steve read off the dues update by member.

Cash in Bank - $2,353.26. Petty Cash - $55.00, Total Cash - $2308.26.
For the month we paid:

- telephone in the amount of $52.05
- electricity $27.21

Observatory Director:

Pine trees taken down to open up horizon from northern observatory. Topping trees will just leave stumps. We should take them completely down and plant short trees in their place. We contacted Troyer Tree Service but will not need them to top trees. We have several colonies of wasps in roll off roof. Jack Smith will take care of these. .

Spring edition of Valley Sky Watcher was handed out.

Director of Observations:

Light Pollution Report

John Gorka, Kathy Hanes, and Ian Cooper met with Geauga County Association Of Township Boards on dark skies. John presented a power point presentation that was well received. Ian would like to have a meeting with Senator Tim Grendell to discuss how PUCO could require full cut off lighting from all utilities operating in the state.

Visitors

No visitors were at this meeting. .

Old Business:

  1. Astronomy day at the Natural History Museum was a success. Russ put together a presentation that was well received.
  2. Ground breaking for Observatory Park was this morning at 10:00 AM. Dan Rothstein attended and there were about fifty people in attendance. Tom Curtain and Holly attended the beginning of the meeting to discuss some of the details of the observatory.

New Business:

  1. Dan and Ian were at the 100 th anniversary celebration of the Boy Scouts / Cub Scouts at Burton Geauga County Fairgrounds. 1500 kids attended. Most of the kids did not have a sense of direction including the direction to where they lived.
  2. Some members have brought to attention that we have a lot of guests at our summer meetings. We should set up all 4 of the scopes for guest viewing.
  3. OTAA Convention is on June 12 th. We need to get our logistics list going. Steve will send an e-mail to John O’Neal to provide notice to the other clubs in OTAA.

Our next meeting is June 5 at Indian Hill Observatory at 8:00 PM.
