October 2008 Edition

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm on October 4 at Indian Hill Observatory. 18 members were present. .

Officer Reports


The minutes from the September meeting are posted on the website. No additions or corrections were noted by the members present.


Steve provided the following financial data:

Cash in Bank - $2,296.39, Petty Cash - $40.00, Total Cash - $2,336.39 .

For the month, we paid, telephone in the amount of $50.53, electricity $7.81, annual insurance premium of $325, $150 to Marty for another 5 gallons of paint for the observatory building and land contract payment of $300. The balance of the land contract is $3,000.

Vice President:

Dan R. continued reporting on the status of construction at Observatory Park.

Observatory Director:

Marty reported that a second coat of paint has been applied to the observatory buildings. The work was done primarily by Russ & Ken. Fortunately, the buildings and grounds did not suffer significant wind damage from Hurricane Ike last month .


The current issue of the Valley Skywatcher was emailed by Tom recently to club members and friends. Due to past publication costs, the newsletter will be distributed electronically in the future. It will also be on the website.


No visitors were at tonights meeting.

Old Business:

  1. The club calendar was reviewed for the next month. A star party at Penitentiary Glen is scheduled for Friday 10/24/08. We will participate in a star party at Observatory Park on Saturday 11/8/08.
  2. Tom reported that Observatory Park has obtained conditional approved to be recognized as a dark sky site by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA)

New Business:

  1. Our next meeting is 11/3/08 at the Rookery 7:30 pm
  2. Steve F. stated that the Geauga Park District purchased 50 of our bumper stickers for an event that will be held at Westwoods from November 1 thru next March. They will display and make our bumper stickers available for purchase.
  3. Club officers for the next year will be elected at the November meeting. At tonight’s meeting, Tom Quesinberry nominated Ian Cooper for President. Dan Rothstein nominated Tom Quesinberry for Vice President. The rest of the officers agreed to continue in their positions: Steve Fishman as Treasurer, Bob Modic as Director of Observations, Marty Niemi as Observatory Director. Ron Baker encouraged members who have not been active in an official club position in the past to consider accepting a nomination for Secretary. During the next month, nominations may be made by club members for any of these official positions.. .

Director of Observations:

Bob provided his monthly report for October, and provided copies. For Bob’s complete observation report, please visit the Monthly Sky Calendar on our website. After Bob’s remarks, members reported their recent observing activities.

The skies were clear, and most people spent time after the meeting to observe.

Meeting adjourned at 7:45 PM.
